Running On Empty – Guest Post

Standard

When Boomie Bol graciously accepted my offer to write a guest post I was flattered and excited yet I had no idea where to begin.

What aspect of my life to I draw upon?

All my blogs are journals of sorts that aim to provide advice. By sharing my experiences I hope that I can help others in some small way.

But, what would readers of Boomie’s beautiful poetry be interested in?

Whilst I don’t consider myself an author, I can string a few words together that occasionally resemble a coherent sentence.

I am a photographer by trade so I could relate something of my current travels in Tokyo, Japan.

But then there’s the whole process of my losing weight recently that has taught me a lot about food, mental strength and physical fitness.

Yet if I like to help others, doesn’t it make sense to do something for someone else rather than grandstand about me?

That’s when I felt drawn to the challenge of poetry.

I’m certainly no poet. But I used to be in a band and have written the lyrics to a few songs. So that’s what I decided upon.

The source of my inspiration is another blogger, Erika. She is simply amazing!

When I wrote a comment in response to one of her posts I realised that I was dishing out advice like some expert without really knowing or understanding her full story.

So I went back to the start and re-read every post on her blog, cover-to-cover. I thought it the least I could do.

Then, based upon her writings, I put together what you see below. It’s a tribute to her honesty, her tenacity, and her courage.

Whilst these are just the lyrics at this stage, I will work with the members of my old band to compose the music shortly, and then make a recording. So please stay tuned.

To Erika:

corriendo por alegría ya
el aire se divierte en tu pelo
deja que tu ánimo se levante
y encuentra el amor
por allí te espera si te atreves

running on empty

v.1

the night of the recital, a time of hopes and dreams?
you’re craving their approval, admiring looks it seems

striving to be perfect, you’re shining up on stage
but danger’s lurking beneath all their empty praise

looking in the mirror, what is it you perceive?
haunted by the image, society has conceived?

chorus

running on empty
away from all the pain
an all-consuming hunger
you’re seeking
a refuge from disdain

v.2

your wish list is a mile long, you say it’s what you want
but are you really sure you know exactly what you want?

avoiding confrontation, you keep it bottled in
each day a constant struggle, the silence deafening

you’re treading such a thin line, drinking to forget
can’t control the anger, don’t want to fail again

chorus

running on empty
away from all the pain
an all-consuming hunger
you’re seeking
a refuge from disdain

v.3

you’re feeling sad and down, cold, you shiver all alone
life isn’t worth living, like tripping over stones

you’re dreaming suicide, but do you really care?
a way out from this hell, you could vanish into air

it’s looking pretty desperate, there’s nowhere else to go
hitting rock bottom, your mother needs to know

chorus

running on empty
away from all the pain
an all-consuming hunger
you’re seeking
a refuge from disdain

v.4

no need to be ashamed child, you’re not the only one
the weight is off your shoulders, you can start again

an old and bumpy road you’re on, the journey still ahead
you’re learning no excuses, no voice inside your head

a box under a bridge is no way to inspire
trust your heart to love again, burning with desire

fill

chorus

running for joy now
the wind is in your hair
let your spirit soar high
and find love
it’s out there if you dare

v.5

you’re writing with expression what’s hidden deep inside
the language is transforming, it helps you feel alive

amazing things’ll happen, you’ll travel here and there
you’ve got a rich new insight, let it take you everywhere

bursting full of confidence, not wasted as another
each day a celebration, like dancing on air

chorus

running for joy now
the wind is in your hair
let your spirit soar high
and find love
it’s out there if you dare

running for joy now
the wind is in your hair
let your spirit soar high
and find love
it’s out there if you dare

  1. Oh, Kim!!! You are way too sweet!!! I feel beyond flattered, happy and grateful! I didn’t know you spoke Spanish! I am sure love is waiting for me to find it ;). Thanks a million!!!!

  2. Truly enjoyed this! Yes – can envision with music too…. very exciting work, and so lovely that Erika provided the inspiration for you ! Thank you for sharing 🙂 ~RL

  3. May Erika experience her own beautiful spirit and come to understand and appreciate the huge difference she can make in the world and in her life if she chooses to focus on the beauty inside her and others. She has already inspired you. Can you imagine how many more people Erika can inspire if she begins to recognise the power and gifts within her and share them with others?
